The Saints sit 14th in the Premier League table but Hassenhutl's side made it back to back wins and seven points out of a last possible 12 with Saturday's 3-1 victory at home to Fulham.

Tuesday evening's visit of Leeds is next and the Saints boss is both encouraged with his side's recent progress and keen to finish the season with a six-point haul.

"I must say, I was very pleased with my side today," said Hasenhuttl after victory against the Cottagers, as quoted by Hampshire Live.

"They showed a very good performance and are getting better and better.

"We have scored ten goals in the last four home games. This shows you. Also, the subs are getting more of an impact.

"We were always talking about dropping points but it always helps when you have guys who are putting in good performances from the bench and Nathan Tella, Theo Walcott and Ibrahima Diallo did that today. This is what you need in these moments."

Asked how important it was to end the season strongly and pressed on each league placing offering more prize money, Hasenhuttl said: "That's exactly what I wanted to say! It does.

"It is always tough to take the injuries we had as an excuse. People say other team has injuries but ours were massive.

"We know that we could play better than we did. We are showing it now. We have two games to go, two tough games and six points to get.

"If we win both we are only three points behind last season - that's good, I think."
