Premier League club make first move in Leeds United transfer negotiations as loan with obligation possible

Leeds United's pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur defender Joe Rodon this summer is complicated by the fact the Welsh international only has 12 months remaining on his Spurs deal.

The North London club have reportedly exercised their option to extend Rodon's deal until the end of 2024/25, leaving Leeds at something of a crossroads in their bid to bring the 26-year-old back to Elland Road next season.

Rodon signed a four-year contract with Spurs in 2020 having joined from boyhood club Swansea City, with the Premier League side reserving the right to trigger an extension for an additional year.

As expected, Spurs have exercised that option, otherwise Rodon would have been able to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a free transfer later this month, which plainly, is a scenario Spurs chiefs are unwilling to entertain.

This has not come as news to Leeds who fully anticipated Rodon's deal to be extended by his parent club when negotiating their initial loan deal for the Welshman last summer. Rodon, meanwhile, played 50 times for the Whites in all competitions throughout 2023/24, establishing himself as one of the first names on Daniel Farke's teamsheet.

Had United been promoted via the Championship play-offs last month, a permanent deal for Rodon with one year remaining on his Spurs contract, would have been a relatively straightforward deal to complete. Tottenham are said to view Rodon as surplus to requirements under Ange Postecoglou therefore are open to a sale, while the player and his camp are likely to be reluctant to start afresh elsewhere given how fruitful his Elland Road spell proved to be.

Leeds remaining in the second tier complicates matters somewhat as the club does not have the benefit of top flight financing, worth a ballpark £140 million per season in broadcast revenue, central distributions and commercial income. While Rodon's signing would appear from the outside to be high on the list of transfer priorities, Spurs' demands over a permanent switch may exceed Leeds' budget.

Leeds are likely to explore the possibility of retaining Rodon's services and engage in conversations with the Spurs hierarchy, but as shown through exercising their extension, Tottenham are not willing to make a loss on the defender by allowing Rodon to move on cheaply, or for free.

Granted, with 12 months remaining on his Spurs contract, Rodon will probably be sold below market value but that is still likely to be around the £10 million mark. Leeds signed Joel Piroe for a reported £12 million last summer and Ethan Ampadu for a further £7 million, but may not be able to commit to such fees this time around - few Championship clubs are.

Leeds could table a loan proposal to bring Rodon back to Elland Road, which includes an obligation to buy the 26-year-old at the end of his Spurs contract when ideally, the club will have been promoted back to the Premier League, rendering a permanent deal more palatable from an accounting perspective. But, there is no guarantee Tottenham will be open to such an agreement, particularly if there is interest from elsewhere in a permanent transfer.

Either way, Leeds' negotiations for the Wales international this summer will be anything but elementary. Spurs' latest move also indicates the London club are holding out for a scenario in which they receive a fee for his services, from any potential suitor.
