Patrick Bamford dismisses 'jabbering' Norwich City chief's claims and says immediate Leeds United promotion would be 'just'

PATRICK Bamford says Norwich City's sporting director Stuart Webber made no sense in insisting Leeds United should be denied promotion unless the Championship campaign is properly concluded.

Webber said on Wednesday that his club could not accept a situation whereby his side were relegated from a properly completed Premier League if sides were promoted from a Championship campaign cut short.

But Bamford says there could be absolutely no complaints if his Whites were promoted without kicking another ball based on United's consistency throughout the campaign.

Leeds sit top of the Championship and one point ahead of second-placed West Brom but with a seven-point cushion in the division's automatic promotion places with nine games left.

The EFL still intend to complete the Championship's remaining fixtures but doubts continue to surround the competition's conclusion due to the country's ongoing battle against coronavirus.

Leeds have not played since the 2-0 win at home to Huddersfield Town on March 7 in which Bamford scored the second goal.

Speaking as part of Leeds United's latest 'Ask' series in conjunction with Deliveroo, Bamford was asked if the season ended now, how would it feel to score the last goal in a promotion season and smiled: "I'd probably have a couple of extra beers.

"But to be honest if that's the way it happens, I think we have done all we can this season to get up and I think rightly so.

"If it finished now, we've been definitely top two, probably the best team in the league the whole season so I think no one could complain about us going up.

"I actually saw the other day about that lad from Norwich who said he was a Leeds fan, whatever he was jabbering on about, it honestly made no sense.

"I think that if we went up now, one it would be just and, two, the fact that I scored the last goal is just quite a good thing to be able to tell my kids when I am older."

The EFL intend to settle divisions with promotion and relegation via an unweighted points per game model if seasons are curtailed - a method which would promote Leeds as champions of English football's second tier.

The EFL's update came on Friday after clubs in League Two voted to end the season in a fashion which would see the Whites promoted to the Premier League if applied in the EFL Championship.

Yet United's promotion destiny is still being planned to be decided on the pitch with Championship clubs indicating a wish to play on and conclude all remaining games in line with the EFL.

Should the season not be completed, EFL chairman Rick Parry still expects promotion and relegation across the divisions, including relegation from the Premier Division, even if the remainder of the top-flight campaign is scrapped.

FA chairman Greg Clarke has also said the FA would seek to block any attempts to declare seasons null and void.

Norwich are bottom of the Premier League and six points from safety with nine games left to play.

Speaking on the Sky Sports Football Show, Webber said: "What we could not accept is a situation where we play all our games and get relegated, but the Championship can’t play, and they automatically promote some teams who haven’t finished the season.

"For anyone who has got promoted from the Championship, it is a 46 or 49 game slog. It needs to be settled on the pitch – both coming up and going down.”
