The 24-year-old was instrumental in his side’s 1-0 win over the Toffees at Goodison Park, putting in a typically assured passing display and reiterating is worth as a defensive presence in the centre of midfield.

England manager Gareth Southgate was in attendance on Merseyside, and on the strength of his recent performances for Marcelo Bielsa’s men, Warnock has argued that Phillips should be the Three Lions’ first choice pick in that holding role.

Analysing a selection of the midfielder’s most impressive passes on Sky Sports News’ Football Show, the former Leeds full-back said: “[This was] His best performance in a Leeds shirt in the Premier League. I think he was outstanding from start to finish.

"This is what’s great about Kalvin Phillips, his ability to switch the play. What it actually does is – that’s Richarlison, your left winger, if you like – you’re driving Everton back down the pitch, and you’re pushing them back. It’s brilliant play. Luke Ayling has to make the run, but the ball from Phillips is quite brilliant.

"Reading of the play, then playing simple, letting the players in front of him play. I thought he was brilliant. Magnificent from him.

"Gareth Southgate will be delighted with his performances, and I think he’s got a big decision to make as to who he plays in that holding position, whether it be him or Declan Rice. Personally, I think he is [ahead of Rice in the pecking order].

"I think the quality he shows, going forward, his ability to start attacks, and his understanding of breaking up the play – I think he has a better passing range than Declan Rice.”

Phillips has already made three appearances for England since winning his first cap earlier this year, but missed out on adding to his tally during the last international break because of a shoulder injury.

In terms of Saturday’s display, the Leeds man recorded a pass completion rate of 95% and made six interceptions in the heart of midfield.
