Ode to Elland Road: Leeds United Supporters Trust pens poem commemorating a year of lockdown
The culture of Leeds and the links between the club and arts scene are being celebrated with a special ode to Elland Road in time for World Poetry Day organised by the Leeds United Supporters Trust.
This upcoming Tuesday will mark a full year since the first Coronavirus lockdown. So much has happened in that time.
We as Leeds United fans saw our season postponed, and then watched the team we love secure long-awaited promotion from behind TV screens rather than in the stands at Elland Road where we all feel we belong.
To commemorate the topsy-turvy year, the Leeds United Supporters Trust is sharing a poem written by Matt Abbott which you can read in full here.
A spokesperson for the Trust said: "The link between the culture of the club, the city of Leeds, and the Trust has perhaps never been stronger. The sense of unity and pride since promotion back to the Premier League has been palpable and very few sides have garnered such affection throughout the city as the current team under Bielsa.
"This affection can clearly be seen in the work that has been done recently to celebrate our club’s greatest icons with murals around Leeds.
"A project that started with the design for the Lowfields Road underpass, near the stadium, and spread throughout the city.
"In the wake of that first mural from the Trust, we have gone on to fund a number of others such as the Pablo Hernandez mural that can be seen in the city centre commemorating that unforgettable goal which for so many of us the moment our promotion dreams became real.
"There has been an explosion of other artwork celebrating the team all throughout the city.
"We’re continuing to work on these types of projects in 2021, so keep an eye out for new Leeds United related artwork popping up around the city in the near future.
"The culture of Leeds United and the city of Leeds are inseparable, this of course reaches beyond artwork and into the local music scene.
"To celebrate this, we at the Trust recently put together a playlist that features artists new and old from around the city such as Kaiser Chiefs, Skylights and Apollo Junction, which can be found on Spotify. Perfect for pre-match listening. Just search Together we’re Leeds. Together we’re Stronger.
"Whether it be in the form of poetry, artwork, or music, the city of Leeds holds a special cultural significance and Leeds United are undoubtedly a huge part of that.
"We at the Trust will continue to work towards nourishing this unity between the club and the city and ensuring that we make our contribution with more of the type of projects we have embarked upon on over the last year."
