Not just the new boys standing out for Leeds United in 'bonkers' Premier League - Dominic Matteo

The Premier League was absolutely bonkers at the weekend and, although it was exciting for fans to watch, managers must be thinking what the hell is going on?

People are taking risks, teams look disjointed but some are taking the madness in their stride, like Leeds are.

Already a couple of clubs look like they’re struggling and, even for some of the bigger clubs, there are things that obviously aren’t quite right.

Maybe the quick turnaround hasn’t been good for everyone, but I think it’s helped Leeds and they probably didn’t want the international break to come right now because they’ve started so well.

When you’re playing well and getting results you just want to keep going; you want the next one to come along quickly.

That said, the way the game against Manchester City started, it was a case of how many are they going to get beat by – they were getting dominated.

City were playing at a tempo that maybe the Leeds players are not used to playing against and Jack Harrison, who is such a good outlet for them in possession, looked like a massive miss. Raheem Sterling’s goal was a good finish but there were a lot of mistakes around it and we’re seeing plenty of that from most teams at the minute, uncharacterstic mistakes at that.

At 1-0 down and having got a little bit lucky with the free-kick that hit the post and one or two other chances for City, Leeds needed to sort it quickly. Recovery was crucial.

I talk about this a lot in my recovery, pressing reset. If things are not going to plan you press reset and go again. Leeds did it brilliantly. They recovered, found their feet and the pressure they put on City was outstanding. There aren’t many teams who can do that and take the game to Pep Guardiola’s men.

Imagine being at Elland Road for that game. Both sides were going for it. Leeds have been involved in a few so far but this one was another brilliant one to watch and it went by so quickly.

There was so much respect from both sides and from the managers, before, during and after the game and I loved seeing that because we’ve lost a bit of that in football.

Ian Poveda was a catalyst for me when he came on at half-time for He’s such an exciting player and one to keep an eye on.

Illan Meslier, again, got himself in good positions and made some important saves. He was brave and clever to stay up when Sterling went in on goal, instead of risking giving away a penalty.

It’s so important for Leeds that their goalkeeper plays well in the Premier League because mistakes in that area are punished and cost teams dearly, as we saw over the weekend with Liverpool stopper Adrian.

Rodrigo looked more up to pace and scored a goal that Leeds’ play warranted, albeit from another goalkeeping mistake.

His goal made him the first Spanish player to score for Leeds in the Premier League and had it not been for an outstanding Ederson save, he’d have got another.

I think Rodrigo will be a bit of a slow burner but a very good player for Leeds once he’s fully up to speed.

They’ve signed some exciting players and the new boy Raphinha looks like another.

Robin Koch has caught the eye with how quickly he’s settled, filling the gap left by Ben White so well that we haven’t been talking about the one that got away. Koch was outstanding against City and looks the part alongside Liam Cooper.

It isn’t just the new signings who are standing out at the minute.

I spoke to Patrick Bamford the other day and he was all about confidence.

It’s so important in sport; it’s everything in football. Bamford is in a good place, enjoying his football and he has three goals already which helps. He might have added to that against City but sometimes, for a striker, it’s about what you do for the team and he always brings something, like his flick-on for Rodrigo’s headed chance.

He brings a bit more than just scoring goals, does the hard yards that some strikers don’t seem to want to do and he brings others into the play. I think if there was something he could work on it’s physicality but we’ve seen already that he’s improved in that area; he’s not scared to be more physical with defenders and he can be that presence.

It’s a really tough role and not many players can do it as well as him at the moment in the country.

Bamford is just really excited about playing for Leeds.

He’s found somewhere he’s happy, he seems in a good place in his home life and long may it continue. Nothing seems to faze him.

He told me he does a bit of extra training with the coaches and it’s paying off.

Confidence is such a big part of it and they all look like they have it.

Leeds are enjoying the Premier League, they’re getting better with every game and it’s so good to see.
