Gruev, who was replaced by Joe Rothwell, was forced off just five minutes after Norwich had taken the lead through a Josh Sargent penalty awarded for Joe Rodon's foul on the Canaries attacker.
But Willy Gnonto had been a threat for Leeds from the outset and the Italian winger set up new star Largie Ramazani to draw Leeds level on the hour mark with a neat through ball from which Ramazani fired home a clinical finish.
