'Never seen anything like it' - Jeff Stelling makes bizarre Torville and Dean reference in cheeky Elland Road dig

The Whites have endured a number of issues with their playing surface in recent times, and even spent £300,000 to install a hybrid pitch last month as a short-term solution.

But conditions underfoot looked to be treacherous once again during Leeds’ midweek win over Southampton, and Stelling was quick to voice his concerns on Saturday afternoon by making a reference to legendary ice dancing duo Jane Torville and Christopher Dean.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, he said: “There’s not truth that Jane Torville and Christopher Dean will be starting for Aston Villa at Elland Road today due to the slippery underfoot conditions. They’ll be on the bench.

"What’s happened to Elland Road?

"I know it’s been an issue for a while, but I saw the game against Southampton – they’re going to curtail Dancing On Ice, but people who are addicts should just watch the football at Elland Road instead.

"I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Paul Merson agreed with the veteran host, adding: "I felt uncomfortable if I’m being honest.

"They play at such a tempo, 100 miles and hour. They want to play at pace, they want to move the ball quickly.

"People were just falling over. There were people nowhere near people and they were falling over.

"That could affect them, you know.”

Leeds can go above Villa in the Premier League table on Saturday evening if they can beat Dean Smith’s side.
