Controversy surrounded Wells' winner as the ball struck the Rs forward on both arms following Luke Ayling's ricocheted header from a Ebere Eze free-kick in the 20th minute.

Wells was left with Kiko Casilla's goal at his mercy after the incident, with referee Peter Bankes failing to spot the infringement.

United's players were left furious at the goal being allowed to stand, with Wells admitting he got lucky before praising the match officials in the aftermath of the game.

"I guess I am," he said over whether he was lucky VAR is yet to reach the EFL.

“I still don't know what exactly happened, I think it hit my hand but not intentionally.

“Sometimes you deserve that bit of luck and today I got it so I'm thankful."

Asked whether he thought he was also fortuitous to avoid a second booking in a feisty affair which saw Kalvin Phillips receive his marching orders late on, he added: "Not really, there wasn't any intent for me to do anything dangerous.

"I think Coops [Liam Cooper] got away with one on me that he could have been sent off for which could have gone either way. The ref did well today, in my opinion."
