'A lot of joy' - Marcelo Bielsa sums up Leeds United promotion and performance in win over Derby County

The new normal and remote press conference feedback stole many of the words Marcelo Bielsa used to describe Leeds United's promotion but one phrase broke through the discordant echoes loud and clear: "A lot of joy."

The Argentine, who joked that one league title didn't make up for his career success rate, was a happy man after watching a much-changed Leeds side win 3-1 at Derby County.

Promotion and the league title were already won by the time Bielsa named a starting line-up that had seven changes from the side that beat Barnsley at Elland Road on Thursday.

Bielsa went straight down the tunnel after the game as the flags and yellow and blue flares came out. His players and staff bounced up and down, singing 'Campeones' and spraying one another with champagne.

He may not have been part of those scenes, but he feels the sentiment behind them as strongly as anyone. As ever, he didn't want the credit.

"A lot of joy," he said.

"After the match, with a good performance, very, very happy.

"Of course the trophy makes me happy but I am working in football from 30 years and one title doesn't change much the percentage of trophies I have. It really makes me happy the fact that I was part of this process with this group of players for two years. Honestly I think more than the capacity of my skills of leadership, what was important in our promotion was the ability and capacity of our players.

"The prize has to be for the players because they did the most important thing."

Bielsa was most pleased to have put smiles on faces in the city of Leeds.

"Leeds is very passionate and people were expecting this promotion with a lot of hope," he said.

"It is not difficult to imagine the people are feeling in this moment for this promotion.

"The supporters were with us 100 per cent, they show all the time their generosity with us.

"I think the big people to recognise are the supporters and the players."

Bielsa said the changes he made for today's game were necessary because the players who beat Barnsley had gone through a mentally draining experience.

He was particularly pleased that, despite the changes and the presence of inexperienced youngsters Ian Poveda, Jamie Shackleton and Pascal Struijk, Leeds' performance levels met the standards they have set en route to the title.

"It was a similar performance according to the average we have played this season," he said.

"The fact we played with three young players who had few minutes in the season and insisted on keeping the performance of the team also is something to be happy about. The performance today of Shackleton, Pascal and Poveda was because they work a lot during the season to perform like they performed today."
