Phillips was the subject of interest from Jamaica earlier this summer, for whom he qualifies through his dad, but today's news and any involvement next month will settle his international future for good.

He received the call from Southgate this morning on his way to Thorp Arch and promptly Facetimed his family to deliver the good news.

The defensive midfielder was an integral part of Marcelo Bielsa's Championship-winning 2019/20 team, keeping a host of talented attackers quiet and contributing impressively to Leeds' passing game. Having turned down a move to the Premier League with Aston Villa last summer, Phillips' decision to stick with his boyhood club and have another crack at promotion paid off and he's now just weeks away from his top flight debut.

Leeds last had a player capped by England in March 2004, when Alan Smith played against Sweden.

His Whites team-mate and club captain Liam Cooper has also been selected for next months international games. The centre-half is in the Scotland squad for games against Israel and Czech Republic on September 4 and 7 respectively.

Ryan Giggs has included Tyler Roberts in his squad for Wales' games against Finland and Bulgaria and Stuart Dallas is in the Northern Ireland squad to take on Romania and Norway, meaning for the first time in club history, Leeds have players in all four of the home nations squads.
