Leeds United transfer news: Marcelo Bielsa wants free agent deal 'at all costs', Whites keep tabs on Portugal boss

The heart of Leeds United’s defence has been hit by injuries too often this season, something which pundits tend to forget when they criticise Marcelo Bielsa’s style of play.

Summer signings Robin Koch and Diego Llorente have had their injury problems, while captain Liam Cooper has also missed six league games, which has often forced Luke Ayling into centre-back.

The absence of Kalvin Phillips has also required a switch around in midfield, leaving the Whites light in both those areas.

The return of Gaetano Berardi is a welcomed boost but reports in Italy suggest Leeds are looking to bolster the centre of their defence with the arrival of Torino’s Nicolas Nkoulou.

Tuttosport claim Bielsa wants the 30-year-old, who is out-of-contract this summer, “at all costs” after enjoying a strong relationship with the Cameroonian in their time at Marseille together.

Nkoulou recently spoke to Spanish outlet Marca and praised the 65-year-old head coach. "The season in Marseille, with Marcelo Bielsa, has also taught me a lot. I have to say it,” he said.

Leeds, apparently, stand in a good position to win his signature, however, the Italian publication says it “must not overlook the possibility” of Manchester United.

The former Monaco defender has made it known that he’d like to play Champions League football again, which is where the Whites’ rivals may have the upper hand.

While Bielsa is expected to extend his stay at Elland Road into a fourth consecutive season, Andrea Radrizzani stated last month he and Orta have analysed alternative options, in case the Argentine decides to leave.

Let’s be honest, it was only a matter of time before someone, somewhere, began speculating about potential successors.

Journalist Bruno Andrade has done just that, claiming Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorim is being “closely followed” by Leeds and Leicester City.

It adds to the O Jogo report, which said two Premier League clubs were monitoring the 36-year-old.

Bielsa addressed his future swiftly after Radrizzani’s interview, revealing he was happy in Leeds as he feels “integrated with the city”.
