Leeds United U21 2 West Ham U21 5: Recap and analysis from Elland Road
and live on Freeview channel 276
The Whites youngsters are back in the country’s top tier of Academy football following last season’s promotion as play-offs winners and Michael Skubala’s side started the new campaign with impressive away wins at Brighton and Manchester United’s under-21s.
A first home clash of the new Premier League Two Division One season then presented itself against West Ham in a 7pm kick-off under the Elland Road lights. But the evening proved a very hard for Skubala’s young side as a senior international excelled for the Irons. Here is a recap of the night’s events.
Leeds United under-21s v West Ham under-21s live
Key Events
- 7pm kick-off at Elland Road
Perkins and Moore
From the 21s both made the bench for the first round Carabao Cup clash against Shrewsbury. Perkins has since joined Oxford United on loan today. So that in turn presents an opportunity, albeit Leeds have now signed Joel Piroe from Swansea City as a new no 9 option. Huge signing. Awaiting team news.
Sprinkler
Caught a few of the West Ham lads out on the pitch. One win and one loss for them so far this season. A brilliant start by Leeds with two wins out of two, both away from home, as a newly-promoted side. Sean McGurk among those to have impressed in last weekend’s win at Old Trafford with a goal and an assist (sort of) - his clever step over deserves an assist.
A big chance
For Leeds United’s youngsters tonight on two fronts, three fronts even. Firstly they have the opportunity to potentially go top with a third win out of three. Then there is the very large matter of stepping out at Elland Road tonight. But this must be viewed as a particularly big potential first team chance with Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup tie at Salford City imminent. Impress tonight and you never know. Players starting to arrive, a handful of West Ham first. Arrivals and team news to come.
