Leeds United transfer news: Phillips make big summer prediction, Rivals keen on key player

January was a very quiet month for Leeds United.

Plenty of players were linked over the course of the window, but none came in before Monday’s deadline had passed.

The likelihood is Marcelo Bielsa won’t be overly bothered by that fact. The Argentine himself admitted that he and his staff hadn’t contemplated bringing anybody into Elland Road in recent weeks, and with the Whites sitting comfortably in mid-table there’s probably a fair amount of truth in his claims.

The summer could be a different kettle of fish, however.

Leeds made headline recently when the San Francisco 49ers increased their stake in the club to 37%, with fresh investment to come as a result of that deal.

And former England striker Kevin Phillips believes that an injection of cash could help the Whites to make the signings they need to elevate themselves to the next level.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “They are heading in the right direction, Leeds.

“If they keep up their high levels of performance and remain in the Premier League, come the end of the season, they will be able to entice quality players.

“Players will have taken note of the way Leeds have played this season. I am sure there are many top players who are thinking, ‘I wouldn’t mind a piece of that.’ Especially given it should be a full Elland Road next season.

"The investment is great news.”

Given the calibre of player that Leeds were able to attract as a newly-promoted side, the hope will be that there is some substance to Phillips’ forecast.

Elsewhere, Chelsea are said to be interested in Elland Road hitman Patrick Bamford, according to Don Balon.

The Spanish publication suggests that the Blues’ new manager Thomas Tuchel is eager to take the 27-year-old back to Stamford Bridge this summer.

Bamford spent five years at Chelsea in the early stages of his career, but failed to make a single senior appearance.

Interest in the forward is unsurprising, however, assuming that there is truth to Don Balon’s claims.

Bamford has hit 11 goals in 21 Premier League outings this term, and his goals per game, shots per game, and total xG are all notably higher than Chelsea’s marquee signing Timo Werner, as per Wyscout.
