Premier League release statement on controversial Leeds United vs Tottenham decision
Leeds United had early claims for a penalty waved away on Saturday.
The Premier League have provided an explanation as to why Leeds United did not get an early penalty for handball against Tottenham on Saturday.
The Whites had claims for a spot-kick inside the first few minutes at Elland Road when Mateus Fernandes leant into a Gabriel Gudmundsson cross. Leeds players believed the ball struck the midfielder’s outstretched arm but referee John Brooks waved play on.
VAR assistant Tony Harrington reviewed the incident but agreed with the on-field decision. Replays showed Fernandes’ arm was outstretched but the ball appeared to make contract with his shirt sleeve.
Following the incident, the Premier League Match Centre wrote on X: “The referee’s call of no penalty to Leeds United was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Fernandes did not commit a handball offence.”
The post also relayed the comments coming from VAR assistant Harrington at Stockley Park, who said: “Confirming the on-field decision of play on. The ball strikes the very top of the arm as he is leaning – in the green zone”.
The Premier League match Centre then followed up that statement with an explanation of the handball rule. It stated: “For the purposes of determining handball offences, the upper boundary of the arm is in line with the bottom of the armpit.
