Championship leaders United have seen their promotion charge halted due to the global battle against coronavirus which currently has the Premier League and EFL seasons indefinitely suspended.

But the EFL have always maintained their desire to complete the remaining fixtures when safe to so and EFL chairman Rick Parry has written to every club in the league outlining the EFL’s plan.

The EFL hope to conclude all remaining games in a 56-day period over the summer months - including the play-offs - with the EFL working on an assumption at this stage that matches will be played behind closed doors.

The Belgian Jupiler League opted to end their season early and keep current standings as they are but Bamford believes finishing the full season would be the correct course of action if possible to do so.

“I think that’s the fair thing to do,” Bamford told the YEP, speaking before the EFL outlined their plans.

“If it was that bad where we were saying we weren’t going to be playing football for the next six months then obviously you look at some kind of different structure to it.

“But I think the main thing is, it’s fair to everyone, not only the people who are challenging for promotion and teams like Liverpool who are running away with the league but also the teams who are fighting at the bottom of each league.

“If you were to say ‘look, the league finishes now, you finish where you are at the minute’ then there would be so many arguments and I feel like a lot of people would fall out of love with the game because arguably it is not fair on everyone if you are not completing the whole season.

“I know people could say you have had 36 games to do as well as you can and you are still in that position but you know that every year at the end of the season and in them last ten games especially, so much stuff happens and so many twists and turns so I think it would be unfair.

“I think it’s in everyone’s best interests to finish it but the only thing I would say is finish it without trying to impact on future seasons as much as possible.”
