The Whites right-back faces competition from five of the 2019-20 Championship season's stand out performers in Brentford duo Ollie Watkins and Said Benrahma plus West Brom's Matheus Pereira, Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic and QPR star Eberechi Eze.

Ayling missed the start of the campaign following ankle surgery last summer with the defender only making his first appearance of the season in the Championship clash at home to West Brom on October 1 as a second-half substitute.

Thereafter, 35 league starts and one more Championship outing from the bench followed as part of a season that featured four goals and four assists.

Ayling's rocket in the 2-0 win at home to Huddersfield Town in March took the club's goal of the season award and now Ayling will be looking to add the PFA award to cap a fine year.

In nominating Ayling for the award, the PFA said: "Ayling brought both attacking and defensive skill to Leeds United’s promotion push this season and was arguably one of their best players.

"For sure, he had one of his best seasons so far in a Whites shirt and will be eager to prove himself in the Premier League."

As part of a season that saw United storm to promotion to the Premier League as Championship title winners, Pablo Hernandez was named the club's player of the year for a record third time with Stuart Dallas was taking the players' player gong.
