Leeds United pursuit of Premier League happiness no cause for nerves or fear says Tyler Roberts

Leeds United’s proximity to promotion glory is no reason for nerves or fear, but a source of excitement for Tyler Roberts and his team-mates.

The attacker has recovered from the latest in a string of niggling 2019/20 injuries in time to make himself an option for Marcelo Bielsa in the final 10 games of the Championship season.

He was on the scoresheet twice as a substitute in the 4-0 win over Hull last weekend, a victory that maintained Leeds’ winning run and kept a five-point cushion between them and third-placed Fulham.

It is now four wins on the trot for United, without conceding a goal, and five games unbeaten.

The longer this streak goes on, the more chance of promotion rivals falling farther behind and the closer Leeds, who welcome Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town to Elland Road on Saturday, will come to achieving the dream of an entire city.

“It will be good to get back to Elland Road and play in front of the fans and hopefully keep the run going,” said Roberts.

“For us as a team we are just focused on ourselves and if we can just keep this run going we know that we will pull away and we deserve it.

“Of course it would be nice to get it [promotion] done early but we will just focus on the next game and then the next game after that, one by one and tick the games off and, hopefully, we pull away, teams drop points and we do get the job done.”

Going into the run-in with an automatic promotion slot and a gap to the play-off places is a position that makes the Whites the envy of 22 other Championship clubs, but it’s unlikely to calm the nerves of a fanbase aching to return to the top flight.

Roberts is cherishing, not fearing, the size of the opportunity before them.

Premier League football – to bring it back to Leeds United would be an amazing achievement and we all know that,” he said.

“But we are all still very calm about it and I think it’s an exciting few months.

“It’s not nervous, it’s not scary, it’s just exciting to be able to be a part of it and try and bring back Premier League football to Leeds.”

Getting the promotion bid over the line will require the squad to go one better, in terms of league placings, than last season and Roberts insists their 2018/19 play-off heartache will be an advantage, not a hindrance.

“Obviously I think we have still got most of the same players that we had last year that have been through that upset and that pain so to be able to be in the same situation this season and have the same players that have been through it already is a great bonus for us, I’d say,” he added.
