United's automatic promotion was confirmed on Friday night without the Whites even playing as second-placed West Brom slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town leaving the Baggies five points behind front-runners Leeds and with just one game left.

That meant third-placed Brentford were the only side who could overhaul United with Thomas Frank's Bees lining up for their penultimate game of the season at Stoke on Saturday lunch-time sat six points behind Leeds but with a far better goal difference.

The Bees also approached the contest having won eight games in a row yet Stoke sealed a 1-0 victory as Lee Gregory capitalised on a parry from 'keeper David Raya to net the only goal of the game seven minutes before the break.

Brentford consequently stay one point behind West Brom with Leeds now unable to be caught in first place ahead of Sunday's clash at Derby County and Wednesday evening's season finale at home to Charlton Athletic.

In securing the 2019-20 Championship title, United have bagged their first honour since being crowned champions of England for the third time in their history by winning the old First Division title under Howard Wilkinson in 1991-92.

Leeds had only been promoted two years earlier as Second Division champions.

In the scramble for this season's second automatic promotion place behind Leeds, West Brom are at home to Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday night knowing victory will send them up.

Brentford are at home to Barnsley on the final day needing to better West Brom's result while Fulham are at Wigan Athletic.

The Cottagers are not yet mathematically out of the race for second but must beat visiting Sheffield Wednesday in Saturday's 3pm kick-off.

Leeds has a fantastic story to tell - and the Yorkshire Evening Post has been rooted firmly at the heart of telling the stories of our city since 1890.
