The game, though, was almost postponed as thick fog descended on Elland Road just minutes ahead of kick-off.

Jimmy Armfield's men got the go ahead and were quickly in control as Joe Jordan struck on nine minutes - though half of the stadium failed to see it.

Gordon McQueen added a second on the stroke of half-time to put the hosts well in control.

Peter Lorimer then struck in the final minute of the game to leave the visitors with a mountain to climb in the reverse clash - a game which United claimed a 1-0 victory to set-up a semi-final clash with Barcelona.
