The Whites and Sheffield United kept trading places in second spot behind league leaders Norwich City.

Both teams endured a drama-filled afternoon as the Blades lost to Bristol City, twice surrendering a lead at Ashton Gate.

United could only concentrate on themselves and it was the visitors who opened the scoring through a Ben Thompson header.

Leeds had a perfect opportunity to level from the penalty spot but Patrick Bamford spurned the chance from 12-yards.

Pablo Hernandez did finally get on the scoresheet before the half-time interval as the hosts pressure finally told.

The Lions refused to go away quietly, though, as Ben Marshall won and then fired home from a spot-kick to ensure nerves would be felt in the stands.

Tension was rising around Elland Road with 20 minutes remaining with Leeds pushing on in search of a comeback that would boost them back into the automatic promotion spots.

Barry Douglas delivered from the left and opposing full-back Luke Ayling timed his run to perfection to power a header home to again restore parity.

Marcelo Bielsa's men pushed on as Adam Forshaw saw a shot saved from distance but pressure again told seven minutes from time through United's Spanish wizard.

Tyler Roberts delivered low and Hernandez timed his late run into the box to slide home to secure all three points and spark wild scenes in LS11.
