England lift the World Cup at Wembley

The story...

Leeds United defender Jack Charlton played a key role throughout the tournament and once again in the final for the host nation.

The Three Lions took on West Germany at Wembley for the World Cup spoils.

Big Jack - who was ever-present throughout the competition - put in another vital showing as Sir Alf Ramsey's men won the game 4-2 with nearly 100,000 spectators packed into the national stadium.

It was West Germany who took the lead after 12 minutes before Geoff Hurst pegged the visitors back six minutes later.

Martin Peters thought he had won the game with a little over 10 minutes remaining in London only for Wolfgang Weber to break English hearts in the 89th minute.

Hurst, though, scored twice to complete a hat-trick in extra-time to ensure England would lift the trophy - the only time they have done so in the country's history.

Another Whites player Norman Hunter was in the England squad that day - but had to wait until 2009 to finally earn a medal for his contributions to the team effort.

Under FIFA rules only the starting eleven would receive winners medals, but football's governing body altered their policy 11 years ago.
