In the opening round, though, United were pitted against Norwegian champions Lyn Oslo, who were a team of amateurs made up of teachers and office workers.
Leeds manager Don Revie said beforehand that he would've liked a three-goal cushion ahead of the away leg.
Despite the obvious gap in quality, even the United boss couldn't have envisaged what was to come.

Mick Jones then added a second before bagging a third with Leeds earning Revie's desired scoreline after just nine minutes of play.
Goals from Allan Clarke followed as he scored twice with Johnny Giles finding the back of the net in between the two strikes.
Jones then completed his hat-trick on the hour mark before skipper Billy Bremner bagged twice himself to complete the rout.
