The Whites welcomed Yorkshire neighbours Sheffield Wednesday to Elland Road and the Owls piled on more misery for Leeds, who looked set to fall further down the English football pyramid having suffered Premiership relegation three years prior.

United were struggling at the foot of the Championship table and were three goals down to the 10-man visitors before the hour mark.

Marcus Tudgay headed the visitors in front and Chris Brunt doubled the advantage before the former was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Jermaine Johnson, though, added a third to give Dennis Wise's men a mountain to climb in LS11.

A late own goal from Lee Bullen and a Richard Cresswell strike as time expired left the scoreline with a better outlook but it wasn't enough.

Leeds had failed to make the advantage pay and slumped to their 23rd defeat from 36 games league outings.

The Whites were rooted to the bottom of the Championship, sitting four points from safety with just 10 games of the season to go.

Head coach Wise was in a bullish mood post-match, calling on supporters to aim criticism at him with the club seemingly destined for League One amid off-field financial turmoil.

"It's better that the fans have a go at me. Bring it on. Have a go at me," Wise said post-match.

"They have got to be disappointed with the position we're in, but have a go at me, don't put my players under more pressure.

"It's not fair to say the players are not giving me everything."
