Leeds United news as Bournemouth midfielder sets ER target and Marsch hails ‘savvy’ Anfield star

Leeds United ran out 2-1 winners against former European champions Liverpool on Saturday. Here are Tuesday’s key headlines:

Marsch hails ‘savvy’ Anfield star

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch was full of praise for Whites shot-stopper Illan Meslier after United’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool.

The Frenchman denied an impressive ten shots on target as Leeds battled to stay level with the Reds, who were undefeated at Anfield since March 2021, before Crysencio Summerville bagged a late winner for the visitors.

Aged just 22 years old, Meslier has kept 18 clean sheets across 85 Premier League appearances - but it’s not just his technical ability which serves the team, according to Marsch.

"What I always say about goalkeepers is I can give them tutelage on presence and mentality and how to handle moments, how to be the quarterback of the team," said Marsch. “But the technical aspect of what I can teach him, that I have to leave up to the goalkeeper coach.

“We needed Illan, I've been pushing him to continue to grow, to be a bigger presence, to be savvier and understand how to handle big moments.

“Certainly today he did that. He did that really well."

Charlton honoured with hometown statue

A memorial to Leeds United legend Jack Charlton has been unveiled in the defender’s hometown of Ashington in Northumberland.

The World Cup winner made nearly 800 competitive appearances for United, more than any other Whites player in history.

His death in 2020 prompted an outpouring of grief from around the football world, and now a tribute to the defender has been erected in the park where his love of the beautiful game began.

Hundreds attended the unveiling on Saturday, where Ashington Town Councillor Liam Lavery painted a touching portrait of Charlton’s impact on the local area.

"Everyone loved him, I used to see him walking around having craic with people, he was such a down to earth man,” said Lavery, who spearheaded the project.

“We don't just love him here for his football, it's him as a person - he's an absolute legend."

Bournemouth midfielder sets Elland Road target

Lewis Cook has insisted that his side ‘sharpen up’ before taking on Leeds United at Elland Road this weekend.

The Cherries will travel to LS11 looking to avoid their fourth succesive defeat after throwing away a 2-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Following the departure of former manager Scott Parker, the Dorset side enjoyed an immediate upturn in results, but a tricky run of form has since seen them drop to 14th in the table, one point ahead of United.

Ahead of Bournemouth’s trip to West Yorkshire, where the winner could climb as high as 10th this weekend, Cook has explained what his team will need to do differently.

“The thing is, if you switch off for one moment in this league you get punished,” Cook said.

“It's an incredible league, and we all know that. We know we've got some bits to sharpen up on.

“It's a real tough one to take, to be honest. I felt like we worked hard enough to get the win. Against a top team, you get punished.”
