Phillips played the full match of Thursday evening's 3-0 victory in a friendly against Wales playing alongside Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Winks as part of a system whereby Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate effectively deployed two holding midfielders.

Phillips then dropped back to the bench for the clash against Belgium with Winks not even amongst the substitutes as Southgate instead opted to play Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson and West Ham United's Declan Rice in centre-midfield.

England trailed after 16 minutes to a penalty converted by Romelu Lukaku but Manchester United's Marcus Rashford equalised with another spot kick six minutes before the break.

Southgate then made no changes during the interval but Phillips then stripped to come on around the hour mark.

Chelsea's Mason Mount then scored what proved the game's winning goal with a deflected effort in the 64th minute, after which Phillips was introduced for Henderson and played the final 26 minutes alongside Rice with the duo both in deep midfield roles.
