Leeds United 1 Manchester United 1: Dominic Calvert-Lewin equaliser as feisty clash ends level
Report from Elland Road as Leeds United fight back from one goal down against Man Utd.
Leeds United came from behind to secure a point following Sunday’s 1-1 draw at home to Manchester United.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s close-range second-half effort earned the draw for Leeds, who fell behind in the first half through Bryan Mbeumo. The Whites were off the pace in final third positions but fought well and had chances to win it.
Daniel Farke named an unchanged team for the fifth Premier League game running with Nico Elvedi keeping Jaka Bijol out the team while Ao Tanka remained part of a midfield three. There was no place in the squad for winger Daniel James.
Leeds started on the front foot, Ethan Ampadu particularly snappy in the tackle but fortunate not to receive an early booking after two big challenges. His opposite number Bruno Fernandes was booked shortly after for a late lunge on Tarik Muharemovic, having lost control of the ball.
The game’s first decent chance came just before the half-hour mark, with Anton Stach whipping in a free-kick from the right which was met by Elvedi. The defender headed into the ground and on target but Senne Lammens palmed away.
Manchester United then missed a glorious chance to go ahead when a cross from the right found Mbeumo free. The Cameroon international was in acres of space but could only angle his header wide of Trafford’s left-hand post.
But Mbeumo did get his goal in the 35th minute, turning home a Youri Tielemans cross from close range. The Manchester United frontman got in front of James Justin after Muharemovic was unable to stop the cross.
Bogle had a good chance close to half-time after finding space and dribbling into the box but his effort lacked conviction and rolled into the hands of Lammens. But Leeds were unable to find a leveller before the break and went into half-time a goal down.
But they only needed six minutes of the second-half to find that equaliser, Calvert-Lewin firing home from close range. A Stach corner was flicked on by Muharemovic whose header found the Leeds striker, his one touch setting the ball for a right-footed strike coming while on the way down.
Leeds had a spell of real momentum after that goal but it was Fernandes who had the game’s next big chance. Leny Yoro ran off Noah Okafor and found the Portuguese international in the box, but his right-footed effort was fired just wide of Trafford’s far post.
Calvert-Lewin then should have had a chance to put his side ahead after a defensive Leeds clearance was fired right into Okafor’s feet. But the winger’s through ball was underhit and intercepted by Harry Maguire.
That was Okafor’s final contribution before he was replaced by Lukas Nmecha, with Sean Longstaff later coming on for Ao Tanaka. Leeds had somewhat faint claims for a penalty waved away when the former substitute was challenged by Maguire.
Leeds came close to winning it in added-time when Lammens punched clear an Ampadu cross that fell at the feet of Stach. The midfielder’s stabbed effort went through the Manchester United goalkeeper but hit Mazraoui behind him.
Ampadu was booked in second-half added-time for a late challenge on Santos that threatened to start a melee but there was no other late drama. The point leaves Leeds seventh in the table.
