"Exemplary" - Club statement as Lucas Perri seals Whites exit to Torino
A Leeds United man has sealed his Whites exit to a Serie A side.
Goalkeeper Lucas Perri has sealed his Leeds United exit to Torino ahead of the Whites bringing in a new no 2.
Perri, signed last summer as new first choice keeper, has joined the Serie A side on a season-long loan ahead of the imminent arrival of Michael Zetterer as United’s new back up keeper to James Trafford.
It is understood that the Serie A side have an option to buy Perri at the end of the loan.
Brazilian keeper Perri joined Leeds from Lyon last summer at a cost of £16m to become the club’s new no 1 and the 28-year-old stayed ever-present between the sticks when fit until boss Daniel Farke made a big change in January.
Perri was then replaced in goal by Karl Darlow who played every minute of United’s final 12 league games, Perri’s game-time then restricted to outings in the FA Cup.
Darlow ultimately departed the club this summer as his contract expired, Leeds on the hunt for a new 1 and Darlow eventually joining Manchester United on a free transfer as Red Devils back-up.
The search for a new no 1 was then ended in record breaking style as Leeds signed James Trafford from Manchester City for a club record fee of £40m plus add-ons and reports followed that Perri was set to join Torino upon Trafford becoming new first choice.
The move was held up by a minor injury and United’s own need to bring in a new no 2 to replace Perri, Leeds on the verge of announcing the signature of keeper Zetterer from Eintracht Frankfurt as the new back-up stopper.
Ahead of Zetterer’s arrival at Elland Road, Perri’s departure has now been confirmed, the Brazilian joining Torino on a season-long loan.
A statement from Leeds United read: “Leeds United can confirm goalkeeper Lucas Perri has joined Serie A side Torino on a season long loan.
“The shot-stopper joined the Whites from French side Lyon ahead of our return to the topflight last summer and made 16 appearances in the Premier League, debuting in the campaign’s opener with Everton.
“The Brazilian played an instrumental role in the team’s run to the Emirates FA Cup semi-final last term, notably starring in penalty shootout victories over Birmingham City and West Ham United.
“Lucas’ professionalism during his time at Elland Road was exemplary and we wish him well during his time in Italy.”
