Leeds United loanee with £1.5m exit option scores again as new team record sixth straight win

Middlesbrough saw off Norwich City at Carrow Road during stoppage time at the end of the second half, ultimately securing a 2-1 win, just days after Leeds’ own comeback in Norfolk. United loanee Greenwood featured from the start for Michael Carrick’s side and opened the scoring shortly after half-time, netting within sixty seconds of the restart.

It was Greenwood’s second Championship goal of the season since joining Boro on a season-long loan, having scored his first against boyhood club Sunderland. The 21-year-old has started each of Middlesbrough’s last four games, all of which have ended with the Riverside Stadium club taking maximum points. The last time Carrick’s men failed to win was September 19, when Sheffield Wednesday held them to a 1-1 draw.

“I thought we played brilliant, we stuck at it. It was tough at times, obviously we know coming here is a tough place to come,” Greenwood told Boro’s official website at full-time.

“I’m buzzing [with the goal]. I’d like to dedicate it to my Grandad, he’s quite ill in hospital so that one’s for him,” he added.

According to various reports, Boro hold a £1.5 million buy option in Greenwood’s loan deal after the ex-Arsenal youngster struggled to nail down a place in Leeds’ first-team since arriving as a teenager in 2020. Leeds’ current attacking options, which include Joel Piroe, Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, Willy Gnonto and Patrick Bamford, somewhat contributed to the decision to loan Greenwood out to the Whites’ Championship rivals where he would stand a better chance of regular minutes.

Boro moved up to seventh with their sixth consecutive victory after failing to win any of their opening seven league games this season.
