Bielsa took the Whites head coach role in June 2018 by signing a two-year deal with the club maintaining the right to extend or terminate the deal at the end of year one.

Affter United's heartbreak of defeat to Derby County in the play-offs semi-finals of May 2019, Bielsa met with United’s board of directors towards the end of May 2019 to express his intention to continue.

Leeds then announced that chairman Andrea Radrizzani had officially exercised the option to extend Bielsa’s contract for a second season in which Leeds then stormed to promotion to the Premier League as Championship champions, finishing ten points clear of second-placed West Brom.

United were always confident that Bielsa would then continue on with his role in the country's top flight and the 65-year-old has now signed a new one-year deal on the eve of the club's first game of the new season away at champions Liverpool on Saturday evening.

Bielsa had already confirmed he would be staying on as head coach for the forthcoming season when speaking at Thursday's pre-Liverpool press conference.

Former Argentina and Chile head coach Bielsa has taken charge of a total of 100 games for the Whites, winning 56, drawing 17 and losing 27 over two seasons.
