The former Wortley player skipped past two Croatians before slotting through to Raheem Sterling, who scored his first England goal at a major tournament.

Commentator Guy Mowbray said the goal was "made in Yorkshire".

Jermaine Jenas said on the BBC coverage: "This all came from our best player on the day - Kalvin Phillips in that attacking position, running in behind, making things happen - he finds himself a space and times the pass to perfection.

"It's right on the money for Raheem Sterling."

He added: "In 60 minutes Kalvin Phillips has gone from a maybe starter to a must starter in this England side - it's some performance he's put in in this game."

His play has earned the inevitable praise from Whites fans, but England fans who support other clubs have also not been able to get enough.

One Manchester United fan said on Twitter: "Kalvin Philips best player on the pitch with Luka Modric."

Another Man U fan tweeted: "Kalvin Philips has been England’s best player so far in this game."

An Arsenal fan added: "That Kalvin Philips guy is so so good man. Calm, composed and intelligent Brilliant midfielder."

And a Scotland fan said: "Kalvin Philips is a class player won’t lie."

Others joked that people should start calling Andrea Pirlo 'the Italian Phillips' - instead of the other way round.
