This summer's European Championships will now take place one year later due to the coronavirus pandemic which currently has football in lockdown with EFL and Premier League fixtures postponed until at least Friday, April 3.

By moving the Euros to the summer of 2021, UEFA hope all European leagues will be able to reach a conclusion once football restarts with UEFA aiming for all campaigns to be finished by June 30.

Former Whites defender Mills also believes the one-year delay to the Euros will work in the favour of both White and Phillips in ultimately seeing them represent the Three Lions next summer.

LOOKING GOOD? Leeds United duo Kalvin Phillips and Ben White are both fancied to make the England squad for the upcoming European Championships now that they are being held in 2021. Picture by Bruce Rollinson.

Both players are still awaiting their first England calls though it had been suggested Phillips was set to be included by boss Gareth Southgate in his squad for the March friendlies against Italy and Denmark before they were postponed.

"I think everybody appreciates that Kalvin Phillips is not a million miles away and he might have been getting a call up," said Mills, speaking on Sky Sports News.

"There isn't a great deal of English holding midfield players at the moment in good form.

"Kalvin will be playing Premier League football next season, he has been the best player in the Championship by far so after a season in the Premier League I think he will be in the England squad.

"He might have even been in it this season with the way things are going.

"I think the Euros were possibly a little bit too early for him but after another season I cannot see him not being in the squad in 2021."

Mills has Phillips replacing West Ham's Declan Rice in his Euro 2021 squad while United's Brighton loanee White comes into the Three Lions fold as part of a big shake-up at centre-back.

Mills has White, Liverpool's Joe Gomez and Everton's Mason Holgate coming into the squad at the expense of Manchester City's John Stones, Aston Villa's Tyrone Mings and Chelsea's Fikayo Tomori

"Ben White has been the best defender in the Championship this season," said Mills.

"If his agent wants to get in touch with me and thank me that's fine but I have got him in the Euros next season. He has been superb, he is good on the ball, he's a good defender.

"We are going to assume that Leeds get promoted and whether he stays at Leeds or he goes to another Premier League side, he will be playing in the Premier League next season no matter what and he is a fantastic player. He has a great chance with a full season."
