Carney made comments about the Whites' promotion bid being aided by football's Covid-19 suspension last season during live coverage of last night's game at West Brom.

The club's official Twitter account shared footage of the comments and owner Andrea Radrizzani defended that action, replying to a tweet which said Leeds should be ashamed by saying: "I take the responsibility of the club tweet. I consider that comment [from Carney] completely unnecessary and disrespectful to our club and particularly to the fantastic hard work of our players and coaches."

The tweet, which is still in place on the club's Twitter feed, has had more than 5,000 replies and more than 11,000 retweets.

Amid the responses to Carney's punditry were tweets and Facebook comments including sexist abuse aimed at the ex Arsenal and Birmingham City Women winger.

Leeds today condemned the abuse.

"Leeds United completely condemns any abuse received by Karen Carney on social media following last night’s Premier League game with West Bromwich Albion," said a spokesperson.

"Everyone at our club respects Karen greatly for all she has achieved in the game, as well as her work in the media and the charity work she undertakes."

The Leeds Twitter account has previously highlighted punditry they disagreed with, including comments from Gabriel Agbonlahor. Leeds head coach Marcelo Bielsa has recently taken issue with some of the media analysis of his team's performances and his style.
