Dermot Gallagher and Tim Sherwood disagree on controversial Leeds United vs Brentford incident

Brentford felt they should have had a penalty against Leeds United.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes Brentford were correctly denied a penalty against Leeds United on Sunday.

The two sides played out an intriguing 1-1 draw at Elland Road with Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelling out Kevin Schade’s opener. Leeds were second best during the opening 45 minutes but improved after the break and were deserving of their point.

But Brentford felt aggrieved to have been denied a chance to double their lead from 12 yards early in the second-half. Goalscorer Schade received a pass just inside the Leeds box and after cutting inside, went down under pressure from Jayden Bogle.

Referee Tony Harrington waved play on and despite replays showing some foot-to-foot contact between Bogle and Schade, VAR opted against recommending a review. And Gallagher explained why.

“I think this is another example of the referee giving the decision and VAR not being able to overturn it,” he told Sky Sports Ref Watch. “If you look, one angle it looks like he made good contact and the other angle, it looks so minimal. But the referee is so close and says no, he will relay that to the VAR, who stick with the referee.

“I think it’s one of them, if you see where the referee is and he’s described what he’s seen. It’s very difficult. I think he’s got his foot planted and he goes over it, that's the angle where I thought it wasn’t a penalty… I think his foot is planted and he doesn’t do anything.

“He didn’t get the ball but his foot is planted, Schade sees that and goes over it. The other angle looks different but that's football, wherever you look at something it looks different.”

Former Premier League manager Tim Sherwood disagreed with Gallagher. He believes the reaction from Bogle all but confirmed he committed a foul on Schade which should have led to a penalty.

“Penalty,” Sherwood insisted. “He made contact. Jayden gives it away, straight away going ‘no I never touched him’. He touched him, it’s minimal but there’s enough contact to bring Schade down so it’s a penalty.”
