A little over six years ago he was playing in League Two for Chesterfield, in front of crowds of two and three thousand away from home.

Now he's a Premier League defender with a 2019/20 Championship winners medal on the mantelpiece and five caps for Scotland.

Steve Clarke's tartan army face Serbia, away, tomorrow night in the play-off final for a place at next year's delayed Euro2020 tournament.

For a man just getting used to living out one dream, featuring in an international championship would be another significant and head-spinning achievement.

"It would be unbelievable," he told the Daily Record."I think it’s every boy’s dream growing up and coming through the academies. As you excel in your career, you always have a dream of playing in these big tournaments, World Cups and obviously the Euros. To be one game away from having that chance, you have to pinch yourself sometimes and I’m really excited, it would be a dream come true for me."

Cooper played in a back three in the play-off semi-final game against Israel in October, a game Scotland won on penalties. He suffered a groin injury in extra-time that counted him out of the two Nations League games that followed in that international break and the two Leeds United games against Wolves and Aston Villa.

But he's back to full fitness ahead of the final against Serbia and Aleksandar Mitrović, the Fulham striker he knows so well from their battles in the Championship and, this season in the top flight. Scotland can hold nothing back, says the Whites skipper.

"I feel fit and my groin feels good, and I’m looking forward to the international games now," he said.

“I can speak on behalf of every player in the squad, it would be an unbelievable achievement [to qualify].

“We’re very hard to beat, we work very hard off the ball. Sometimes we might only need that one chance in a game.

“Everything’s got to go into that game. Everything we’ve hoped for, everything we’ve worked on, everything we’ve trained for and I’m really looking forward to it."

Fellow Whites Stuart Dallas and Gjanni Alioski are also involved in Euro2020 play-off finals tomorrow night. Dallas and Northern Ireland host Slovakia, while Alioski travels to take on Georgia.
