If Leeds are to go down, there will be an almighty rebuild to oversee at Elland Road, but amid uncertainty over the ownership picture, who will be in charge of transfers and who will even manage the team come the start of next season, there are several things United must do regardless of their league status.
The YEP has compiled a checklist the club must work through in order to ensure a smooth summer of transition can be achieved.
7. Draw up a list of transfer targets
Once budgets have been agreed upon and a hierarchy in place, it would be prudent for Leeds' key decision-makers in the transfer market to draw up a list of transfer targets to work on throughout the summer window. Regardless of which league the club finds itself in next season, there will be sales and the need to supplement a threadbare squad. Players will come in - but they need to be the right players. 8. Contract renewals and extensions
The likes of Adam Forshaw and Joel Robles will see their Leeds contracts expire at the end of June, therefore it would be a good idea to make a decision before the transfer window opens two weeks prior whether they will remain at the club or not. In addition, as is the case at football clubs each summer, decisions should be taken on contract extensions for players whose current deals are into the final two years. 9. Assess returning loan players
Leeds have several players who've spent the 2022/23 season - or part of it - out on loan. The likes of Charlie Cresswell [pictured], Lewis Bate and Joe Gelhardt are forecast to have a future at Elland Road, meanwhile Ian Poveda, Dan James and Helder Costa are all still on the club's books. 10. Assign backroom roles
Any new coach will need to decide which members of staff he wants in his Leeds backroom team. Michael Skubala took on a first-team coaching role under Javi Gracia and now Sam Allardyce and is expected to stay at the club even if Allardyce and assistants Robbie Keane and Karl Robinson depart. There is the possibility Skubala returns to coach the Under-21 side with whom he enjoyed success this season, given current 21s lead coach Paco Gallardo was a Victor Orta hire.
