Leeds United 1 Hull City 1 (Hull win 9-8 on penalties): Whites crash out of Carabao Cup with familiar face back to haunt

United head coach Marcelo Bielsa changed the entire XI that started Saturday's Premier League opener at Liverpool with club record signing Rodrigo making his first Whites start and 17-year-old Charlie Cresswell making a first appearance of any kind.

Kiko Casilla was also named captain but Leeds never got going and after some shaky early moments it was only some smart late saves from Casilla that prevented the League One Tigers from moving out of sight.

Incredibly, United then equalised in the 92nd minute as Gjanni Alioski netted with only United's second shot on target but Leeds' relief was shortlived as the Whites were then beaten 9-8 on spot kicks with Alioski and Jamie Shackleton both missing from 12 yards.

Hull took the lead after just five minutes when former Whites forward Wilks beat Casilla with a deflected effort from the edge of the box from a move which began from Casilla's poor clearance.

The Tigers then twice went close to doubling their lead in the ninth minute as the impressive Keane Lewis-Potter saw a shot blocked before Casilla denied Wilks from inside the box after an earlier Tigers shout for handball.

But Leeds then squandered a fine chance to level in the 11th minute when 17-year-old debutante met a Barry Douglas corner only to head his effort wide from a central position close range.

Back came Hull with a mistake from Cresswell letting in Wilks who cut inside only to see his low effort deflected behind for a corner off Leif Davis.

Casilla then fumbled a long-range effort from Lewis-Potter before gathering at the second attempt before Leeds finally offered promise in open play as Ian Poveda cut inside and saw his effort deflected behind for a corner.

But Hull were comfortably on top and Wilks twice went close to adding a third with the Tigers striker heading wide and seeing another low shot saved by Casilla either side of Hull's Alfie Jones producing a terrific block to keep out a fierce drive from Gjanni Alioski.

Four minutes before the break, 19-year-old prospect Lewis-Potter then curled a fine effort from the edge of the box just wide after a long pass from former Whites youngster Daniel Batty.

United then wasted their best chance yet just before the break when Alioski lashed a wild effort over the bar after latching on to a deflected effort from Rodrigo but the half ended with Jones flashing a header just over.

Hull were then straight back on the attack after the restart with Casilla unconvincing in dealing with a cross before Batty fired over.

Casilla then survived another scare after a heavy touch when Wilks was judged to have fouled him.

Poveda was proving the brightest spark for the Whites and was unlucky to see two fine runs come to nothing before he played in Rodrigo who got his feet in a muddle.

But Hull were continuing to cause all sorts of bother and a long-range effort from Greg Docherty was kept out by a diving save from Casilla.

Further Tigers shots peppered the Whites goal and Hull were then inches away from doubling their lead in the 78th minute when James Scott fractionally failed to convert from a tight angle after Casilla had saved a powerful effort from Docherty.

With just four minutes left, Docherty was then played in one on one but failed to beat Casilla who was now keeping Leeds in it with his saves.

United's first shot on target then at last followed in the 89th when substitute Robbie Gotts cut inside and saw his effort saved.

And amazingly Leeds then equalised in the third minute of added time when Alioski rifled an effort into the top right corner following a cross back into the box from Barry Douglas and Cresswell header from a corner.

The late strike ensured the game would be decided by a penalty shoot out and despite Alioski's early miss, former Whites defender Lewie Coyle also failed to hit the back of the net.

Casilla then netted for Leeds as the score ticked on towards 8-8.

But Shackleton then saw his penalty saved and Alfie Jones then converted his effort to send the Tigers through.
