Marcelo Bielsa's Whites had 66 per cent of possession yet Brighton produced the same amount of both attempts at goal and shots on target.

Both sides had seven shots at goal of which just two were on target with Neal Maupay's strike from the flowing move in the 17th minute the only attempt to bulge the back of the net.

Leeds mustered more corners with five opposed to Brighton's two but failed to threaten with them and the Whites have only netted four goals from set pieces this season though that is still the joint ninth-best.

As well as having the majority of possession, Leeds had by far the better passing success rate with 82 per cent compared to Brighton's 69 per cent.

Cooper and Stuart Dallas were United's most economical outfield players in possession with passing success rates of 89 per cent.

Leeds also won more aerials and tackles with the count 13 to 12 in United's favour for both whilst United had 16 successful dribbles as opposed to Brighton's eight.

There was little to choose between the two sides in terms of being dispossessed with Leeds losing the ball nine times and Brighton eight.

Yet the one moment of real quality in the final third made the difference with Neal Maupay finishing off a fine move in the 17th minute to settle the tie after being afford space by United's defence when connecting to Alexis Mac Allister's cross.
