Leeds United 0-1 Aston Villa - one source of light in the gloom of a bad day for the Whites

You have to dig for positives after a result and a performance like that, but there was at least one from Leeds United's 1-0 loss to Aston Villa.

It wasn't a good day for many reasons, Leeds failing to take their first half chances having fallen behind to a fortuitous goal and then failing to break down a stubborn second half defence.

But there was a little light in the gloom.

Good day

Diego Llorente

The Spaniard not only came through another 90 minutes without injury, he came through a physical battle unscathed. He showed good fight against Ollie Watkins and on the ball he displayed some lovely passing too. A few little moments of theatrical behaviour didn't do a lot to endear him to his new fanbase but he tried to come forward with the ball and did it well in the first half. A promising, if delayed start to life at Leeds.

Bad day

Helder Costa

Having impressed Bielsa with a couple of recent cameos, the Portuguese winger got a rare chance to start and failed to grasp the opportunity. He wasn't alone in finding it difficult to make an impact going forward, especially in the second half. But he needs to fight harder for his minutes and make things happen.

Number of the day

3

Raphinha managed just three dribbles all game and having looked so dangerous running at Villa in the first half, that shows how ineffective he was in the second half. He couldn't get at defenders, couldn't find space and didn't produce the magic he's so capable of producing.

Turning point

El Ghazi goal

Scoring the first goal allows a visiting team to shut up shop at Elland Road and use the counter attack. Villa actually continued to have a go at Leeds in the wake of the goal and Anwar El Ghazi could have done more damage with three further shots. But the second half became a familiar story as they sat in with the luxury of the lead.
