Gerrard reaction
“Very satisfying. I can’t ask for any more from the players, I’m extremely proud of how they went about their win. We thoroughly deserved win, it was done with control, we dominated the majority of the game. It’s not easy coming to teams with a change of manager. The crowd, atmosphere we had to control a lot of things as well as performance.
I loved it. Before the balls kicked, coming into Elland Road with a new manager in place, the fans will be well up for it, the noise they were generating was very impressive. We didn’t start either half as well as I wanted to - that was the only negative. How we dominated out of possession was a plus. Three wins on the spin, we must be doing something good. Goalkeeper was quiet tonight. Looking back on the performance, I’m happy. But as a manager, you never enjoy it until it’s done.”
Jesse Marsch reaction
How did it go wrong? “I underestimated the stress of the moment from the players perspective. We’ve had a very good week, good ten days together. I’ve tried to create clarity for the group as to how we want to play, and the behaviours and tactics that we want. It was clear from the beginning that we lacked confidence and aggression. I’ve heard a lot about the ER crowd and I thought it was fantastic from the beginning but I also could see that the players want to do so badly for each other and for the club and fans that it brings more pressure and stress onto their shoulders. I said we have to stay calm and be clear and I can see that that’s a message we have to stay strong and that we need to know when we step on the field that the fear will ensure, not protect us from, failure. We have to be fearless, attack and go after opponents - that’s the biggest lesson from what happened tonight.”
