Leeds United's Under-23s secured a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic on Monday evening as Jamie Shackleton stepped up his comeback from injury.

Carlos Corberan named the Thorp Arch academy product in his starting line-up at the DW stadium as the utility man saw his first minutes in over a month following a quad injury.

The Latics started the stronger of the two sides but it was Mateusz Bogusz who fired the first warning shot as he saw an effort from distance strike the post.

United were spurred on by the strike as they created a number of chances in a bid to break the deadlock.

Liam McCarron dragged a shot wide of the mark before goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai produced a strong save to keep out a Pascal Struijk header.

Jordan Stevens again tested the reflexes of the Wigan stopper as he tipped a shot over the bar from range before he pounced to his right to palm an Oli Casey effort wide on the stroke of half-time.

The returning Shackleton was replaced at the break by Theo Hudson with the 20-year-old coming through 45 minutes unscathed.

United finally had their breakthrough shortly after the interval as the visitors capitalised on some sloppy play from the Latics.

Alfie McCalmont intercepted a loose pass in defence which set striker Ryan Edmondson free who scored at the first time of asking for a second successive outing.

Corberan's side doubled their advantage a short while later as McCalmont was again involved with a defence splitting pass.

The midfielder found the run of Jordan Stevens inside the box with a perfectly-weighted ball as the winger sealed all three points for the Whites.

There was still time for another blow for Wigan as Chris Merrie received a straight red card for a late lunge on Bryce Hosannah.

United, though, failed to add to the scoreline as they made it back-to-back victories in league action in Lancashire.
