Marcelo Bielsa named an unchanged line-up for the visit of the Bluebirds with club captain Liam Cooper remaining sidelined with a calf injury.

United set out like they meant to go on as Pablo Hernandez fired a warning shot within seconds of the start as he scuffed a glorious chance wide of the mark from inside the box.

Two goals in as many minutes followed as Helder Costa opened the scoring as he finished off a deadly break from Bielsa's men in the sixth minute.

City won themselves a corner but were picked the ball out of their own net just moments later as a precision pass from Hernandez set free the Portuguese wide man who made no mistake.

Cardiff had barely found their feet before Leeds doubled their lead with the next attack.

Patrick Bamford brought down a Stuart Dallas cross before rifling a half-volley home from inside the six-yard box to spark wild celebrations in the stands and hand the Whites a cushion.

Leeds were attacking at will as saw a penalty shout turned down by referee Tony Harrington as Joe Bennett brought down Costa inside the box.

Dallas and Kalvin Phillips fired efforts of the bar while Danny Ward and Joe Ralls also shot over the crossbar for the visitors as they mustered two rare efforts on goal before the interval.

Leeds again added to the scoreline just seven minutes after the break as Bamford converted from the spot having been brought down by goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

The striker hauled himself up to send the Bluebirds stopper the wrong way.

Cardiff did strike back as Lee Tomlin made the most of a Kiko Casilla error as the Spaniard came to punch a cross clear with the forward looping an effort over the defence and into the far corner.

Berardi was called into action moments later to nod a header off the line before the visitors ensured a nervy finish as Sean Morrison broke free to find the bottom corner with a diving header.

The City skipper, though, received his marching orders with four minutes to go with a lunge on substitute Eddie Nketiah.

It was Neil Harris' side who had the final say though as they struck just two minutes before time expired with a ball straight through the heart of the Whites defence as Robert Glatzel tucked home back Casilla.

United had a glorious chance to win the game in added time as Nketiah forced Etheridge into a good save before Ben White fired wide as time expired to leave United ruing what could have been.
