“We had worked on short corners in training and I’m glad that the hard work paid off."

Klich received the ball from a well-worked short corner before steadying himself to launch an unstoppable curling shot into the top right corner as the Riversiders were blitzed at Elland Road.

The Pole beat off competition for the award from West Brom's Matheus Pereira and Stoke City's Sam Clucas with Pereira nominated for his free-kick at home to Bristol City and Clucas shortlisted for his lob from the halfway line at Barnsley.

Lead Sky Bet EFL Goal of the Month judge and Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman said: "Mateusz Klich doesn’t score many goals, but when he does, they’re often special.

"This curler was no different as he added his second of the game and put the icing on the cake of the 4-0 drubbing of Middlesbrough.

“Already full of confidence from his earlier effort, he knew what he wanted to do as soon as the ball was rolled to him on the edge of the area, and the execution of the shot could hardly have been more precise.”
