Leeds United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Josuha Guilavogui on a free transfer until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The former France international has put pen to paper on a short-term deal which runs until next summer and could make his debut this weekend away at Bristol City, pending international clearance.

Guilavogui requires a work permit in order to represent Leeds in the Championship, although that is expected to be granted in due course and nothing more than a formality following the club's lengthy process courting potential free agents.

The signing comes after injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev in defensive midfield, both of whom remain sidelined until the New Year. Guilavogui has been at Thorp Arch in recent days, proving his fitness and finalising the details of his move which will see him play in England for the first time in his career.

The 34-year-old is also capable of playing at centre-back having represented previous club 1.FSV Mainz 05 almost exclusively in a defensive role throughout the 2023/24 Bundesliga campaign.

Guilavogui, who won seven caps for the French national team a decade ago, was among a small number of players considered by Leeds following the double injury blow to Ampadu and Gruev. He will be expected deputise at centre-back when required but is more likely to feature alongside Ao Tanaka or Joe Rothwell. The makeshift midfield pair remain unbeaten after appearing alongside each other in draws versus Norwich City and Sunderland, and recent victories against Sheffield United and Watford, at which Guilavogui was pictured in attendance.

Which shirt will Guilavogui wear?

Numbers available to the ex-VfL Wolfsburg and Atletico Madrid man include 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20 and 23, the latter being the shirt Guilavogui wore for several years whilst at the Volkswagen Arena.
