Former RB Leipzig boss Marsch was confirmed as United's new head coach on Monday evening, less than 36 hours after the Whites had sacked Marcelo Bielsa following three and a half years in charge.

The promotion-winning boss was axed following Saturday's 4-0 loss at home to Tottenham, a fourth-straight defeat taking United's recent return to just one point from their last six fixtures and 20 goals conceded in the last five games.

How difficult has it been filling the shoes of a living legend?

“I said this in a I think one of the first interviews I did, I have followed I think living legends everywhere I have been. I think being secure with the fact that the predecessors did a lot of really good things well. Marcelo I think changed the mentality of the club and the team, he helped created a winning and successful mentality here, understanding the things that he did well and how to stay true to some of those things. But then in the end also knowing that I don’t have to be Marcelo Bielsa. It’s more important for me to be me and for to provide what this team needs in order to continue to get better and to grow. I have said already that I have followed Marcelo’s career, I have watched him closely, I have respected so many things that he has done and I have learned things from what he has done. But clearly I am different, I am my own person and I have my own ways and it’s important that they understand me and that they know what those things are and that they appreciate them but in the end what’s most important is that the team can appreciate each other and know how to on the field nd do everything they can.”

On Mike Grella - saying do not play with fear - is that the motto here?

“Yes always, I used to have an equation and Mike Grella will know this - fear to fail equals failure. And the way we play, our style of play is fearless. I think we have a lot of fearless young men here and we have to tap into that fearlessness and it will help us in a situation like this. The way we play is that making mistakes is never a bad thing because we are aggressive to go and win the ball back, we are aggressive to try and impose our will on the opponent at all times and then to help educate the players and the team exactly what that means on every given day and how to use it as a strategy to be better than the opponent. That’s what it is. I miss Mike Grella, I miss another guy like Lloyd Sam, they were great players for me and great young men and I have been lucky to have a lot of good connections with people like that.”

How did you feel when taking over and taking first steps into Elland Road?

“I understand what a big job it is and I understand how important it is to the fans, to the community here. I have followed football history for years and when Jacko kept reminding me that I played against Leeds, I am very aware of what this is and so I am happy to be here. It all happened very fast. As much we talk about that it’s been a couple of years that I have been following because of Victor, this all happened very very fast and I have had to wrap my brain around exactly what it is and what it needs to be and that’s entirely my focus now . Clearly I am emotional and I am excited and I just want to channel that energy into things that can help the team.”

On the smilar styles to Marcelo - does that allow you to make a quicker impact?

“This is the reason I am here I think. I certainly didn’t have the career, the coaching career, the managerial career that Marcelo had before he came. But I think anyone who is in charge of a sporting side of a club should do a really good job of trying to figure out what in the end are our processes and succession plans for players, for staff, certainly for managers so that the transition from one phase of a club to the next is as smooth as it can possibly be and certainly then when I sit and talk with Victor at different moments and he explains to me the reasons why he believes I am the right person, you can’t help but be attracted to that kind of analysis and also energy. I believe as well it’s the reason I am here is because I believe in many ways that I can be the right kind of fit and it can be the right kind of fit for me.”

On the Premier League relegation battle - how far up does it stretch do you think?

“My focus is entirely on going from day to day and that is the end point. Of course, did I watch the Leicester Burnley game, I would like to tell you it was just to scout Leicester but that’s not true. I am very aware of the fact that other results can impact what happens with us but the most important thing for us is that we focus on the things that we can control and we do the job ourselves. That’s entirely my focus.”

On Leicester - how tough a test is this to start?

“First, I think Brendan Rodgers is a very good coach. He’s flexible. But also I think he has a very clear playing style. They also have a very good team. With Vardy back, I think that brings a boost to them. Let’s see if he starts or not, I would expect that given his performance on Tuesday that he would be a big option from the start. They are a team that plays well both with the ball and against the ball, we will have to have a very clear match plan and understand the ways that they can make it difficult for us and we also need to be very clear on how he can make it difficult for them. I think it’s a very, very difficult one and being an away match a very difficult first start. But whatever, fearlessness is what we have talked about so we had better be in this moment.”

On the Leeds intensity - how do you view it - does it need more or less?

“If you look at the running data from the season they are pretty much easily the most intense team in the league and for me this week has bee about not overloading them. Obviously I know that a new manager comes in and and they all want to make an immediate impression on the pitch that they all want to go 100 per cent all of the time so I am very aware of that and I know that I have to manage the situation physically, mentally and emotionally in every way so that I give them the best chance to adapt and learn and grow into what I want them to become day by day. And I can tell you that effort...they don’t need reinforcement on effort here. These young men are hard workers, they give everything they have and, again, it’s about how to channel those efforts in the right way.”

The myriad of injuries - are any others in danger of missing Saturday?

“It’ s a little bit difficult to say. We will evaluate Patrick and what that means, can be on the bench, does he need a few more days. But he is close, I can tell you that. He us close. Diego Llorente was not in training today and he is questionable for the weekend and obviously with Liam and Kalvin we have already spoken and there’s a few others that we are just kind of going step by step and making sure that we can prepare them as much as possible but that we are not pushing too hard.”

Thoughts on this squad as a whole, particularly the wealth of wide options?

“I think that first of all we have a lot of positional flexibility. In the long term, I think that will help us adapt in games and adjust. In the short term, I want to try to give them clarity and principles and tactics and then clearly on strategies in the match and what we are trying to achieve. So let’s see, I have been working with one formation this week with them, I am not going to say what that is. However I am trying to step by step. I also have Leicester in mind in the last week and trying to think about how to put a process in place to help the players adapt and what it would mean for this game and we have go to step by step through every game and, again, try to think about how to make complicated things as simple as possible so that the players can execute that.”

Continuity - how important having Mark Jackson on your coaching staff?

“He has been vital and it’s not just about his experience, it’s about the type of person he is .Honestly, I feel lucky that Jacko is so willing ad so committed. I think we were here last until 9pm or something talking about tactics and adjustments and what they have done and done well and what we think needs to change and how we go forward and he has been fantastic so certainly that connection. I can also tell you that Rob Price has also been incredibly helpful and looking at how to deal with the physical situations and managing the players, that has been fantastic, everyone, and that’s what you see. The club is so much more than one person. There’s a lot of positive energy here and people want to help as much as they possibly can.”
