Marcelo Bielsa's Premier League promotion with Leeds United has left former Argentina star Javier Mascherano overjoyed and nostalgic.

Mascherano - who played for Bielsa during his four-year spell in charge of the Argentina national team - won an Olympic gold medal under his stewardship in 2004.

That same summer the Whites were relegated from the top flight amid financial turmoil but Bielsa has helped end 16 years of hurt this term as the club ended their absence from the Premier League in style.

United lifted the Championship trophy last week, after Bielsa plotted a course for a return to England's elite at the second time of asking.

Leeds claimed the second division title by an impressive 10 point margin following a strong run of form after the season's restart amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Bielsa was seen enjoying the celebrations and embracing his squad at Elland Road as videos emerged on social media in the wake of promotion.

The 65-year-old also joined in the on-pitch trophy celebrations following the club's 4-0 win over Charlton Athletic in the final outing of the campaign.

The scenes of joy were pleasing for Mascherano. The ex-Barcelona man was delighted to see his former head coach achieve such a feat in West Yorkshire.

"This that has happened to him in recent days made me very happy," Mascherano said.

"Seeing him happy made me remember when we won the gold medal in Athens.

"I am very happy that a person like Marcelo is doing well.

"For all the values that he transmits, and not only for those of us who live in the world of football but also for the society that needs this type of people."
