As part of Sky Sports' Monday Night Football Show, former Liverpool star Carragher and ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville used a points system to rank the country's best sides over a three-season period.

Revie's Whites were assessed for their achievements from the 1968-69 to 1970-71 season, during which time Leeds won a First Division title, an FA Cup and a Fairs Cup as well as twice finishing First Division runners-up.

Teams scored five points for a European Cup win, four for a league title and three for any other European competition success.

Two points were on offer for an FA Cup win with one for a League Cup or other trophy such as the UEFA Super Cup or Club World Cup.

Being European Cup runners-up scored two points with one point on offer for being league runners-up.

On that basis, Leeds finished with nine points during that selected time-frame, 14 less than Bob Paisley's Liverpool side who were declared the best ever English club side for their achievements between 1975-76 and 1977-78.

During that time frame, the Reds won two European Cups, two First Division titles, a UEFA Cup, a European Super Cup and also finished First Division runners-up.

Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United side from 2006-07 to 2008-09 were ranked second best with Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan's Liverpool outfit from 1981-82 to 1983-84 in joint third along with Ferguson's Red Devils from 1998/99 to 2000/01

Assessing Leeds' entry in 12th under Revie, Carragher said: "That was a great era for Leeds, and they were runners-up in so much.

"I never saw them play but they were a brilliant team that you heard so much of, that Revie team.

"In some ways, that Leeds team, even though they won league titles, they are probably remembered a lot for losing big games, but they were there or thereabouts throughout the 70s.

"They were a brilliant team and hopefully we see the club back in the Premier League next season."

The list did not factor the current Liverpool or Manchester City sides or teams before European competitions for clubs.
