Illan Meslier has revealed his delight at playing a match-winning role in Leeds United's 1-0 Yorkshire derby victory over Sheffield United.

The 20-year-old goalkeeper recorded his first clean sheet of the new Premier League season on Sunday at Bramall Lane as the Whites recorded a narrow win over their county neighbours.

Meslier - who had conceded seven goals in just two games before kick-off - produced a string of stunning saves to play a key part and earn the Man of the Match award in the Steel City.

The French stopper first halted Blades midfielder John Lundstram with a brilliant low save down to his right from inside the box, before a strong hand also kept defender George Baldock at bay in the first half.

Meslier's heroics meant that Patrick Bamford's late header at the opposite end was enough to secure all three points for Marcelo Bielsa's side.

"I'm happy because in the last game [against Fulham], I think I can save two of the goals. Now I save two important shots from Sheffield," Meslier said.

"We arrived at half-time at 0-0. It's important. I am happy, but it's just one game.

"We are focused for the next game [Man City] and then another one and the next one after that."

With the victory over Chris Wilder's men, Leeds made it six points from a possible nine from their opening three games of the top flight campaign.

"Of course, we are happy. It's an important win," he added.

"It's not easy. Every game is hard. This game [against Sheffield United] is played with the head and the mental [side] so we are happy to score before the end of the game.

"We keep a clean sheet for the first time too, the first of the season. It's good for the future, I hope.

"For the spectators I think a 4-3 [result] is better. But for the team and for me 1-0 is better.

"I save, we win. It's good."
