'If Leeds United approach this game as they usually do, they'll win - former Whites defender confident ahead of Southampton clash

Newly-promoted Leeds United are 'well capable' of beating fellow midtable side Southampton tonight, but they must be wary of set-piece danger says Dominic Matteo.

The former Leeds and Liverpool defender has welcomed the return of Pascal Struijk to Liam Cooper's side in the centre of Marcelo Bielsa's defence, but admits they've got to be at their best in the air tonight at Elland Road.

Eleven of the Saints' 31 Premier League goals have come from set-pieces, an area of Leeds' game that has caused them problems this season. The Whites have conceded 11 from free-kicks and corners.

"Ralph Hasenhuttl has done a really good job, I think he's a good manager with a good style," he told the YEP.

"I think they'll be fine, they've got good set-piece delivery from James Ward-Prowse. That's a key area and we've got to make sure we win those first headers. The first header is so important, we've got to win a lot of first balls. We've been alright at that in recent times, we've just got to make sure we react well to each delivery.

"I'm glad Liam Cooper is back together with Pascal Struijk. I know Diego Llorente is coming back but I'd like to see Coops and Struijk given a little run. They've looked alright together to me - the goal against Wolves was a bit of a freak goal - and I hope they get the chance to build a partnership.

"I like Luke Ayling, he's a brilliant player, but I just prefer to see a centre-half at centre-half."

Two points separate the Saints from their hosts ahead of tonight's 6pm kick-off and having somewhat undeservedly lost 1-0 to another midtable side in Wolves last weekend, Matteo believes Leeds have a real chance in games against the gaggle of teams below the top 10 and above the relegation zone.

"I think if Leeds approach this game as they usually do, they'll win," he said.

"Usually we bounce back if we lose a game or two. A win would put us 10th and that would be great for the team's confidence. There's not a lot in it when it comes to these games against Wolves and Southampton, teams around the middle of the table and that's a real compliment to Leeds, as a newly promoted side.

"Leeds are well capable of winning these games and I think we're better equipped to get the result tonight."
