Ian Wright has questioned Marcelo Bielsa's decision to leave Jean-Kevin Augustin out of Leeds United's defeat to Wigan last weekend.

The Whites fell to a 1-0 home loss at the hands of Paul Cook's Latics with Augustin watching on from the stands at Elland Road for a second game running.

United missed countless chances in LS11 before a deflected Joe Williams corner saw the visitors earn all three points to stun Bielsa and his men.

Patrick Bamford was once again United's only senior striker named in the squad, with forward Tyler Roberts stepping off the bench late on in the only Leeds change of the afternoon.

Augustin - who made the move to West Yorkshire from RB Leipzig on loan early last week as a replacement for Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah - is yet to make a first team appearance for the club but featured for 45 minutes on Monday in Under-23s action against Sheffield Wednesday.

Bielsa said afterwards that the 22-year-old was yet to get up to speed at Thorp Arch which is why he was left out, but pundit Wright disagreed with his thinking.

"We’re not talking about a prolific goalscorer [in Patrick Bamford], but we’re talking about a really good footballer in sense of a target man and holding it up," he told Radio 5Live.

"He’s very good in that respect, of course, but yes, he’s missed chances this season.

"But going back to Augustin and Bielsa saying he’s not up to top speed - if you’re a striker, what speed do you need to be up to, to come up for ten minutes at the end of the game?

"I don’t think the way Eddie played suited Bielsa’s style and that’s why he went back. With Eddie as well, he was a substitute and whether he’s up to speed or not he came on changed games, he scored goals in those games.

"The way to get a striker up to speed to start is to get him on the pitch to score goals and then you get him up to speed. I just can’t go with that getting up to speed one, it just seems a ridiculous thing to say."
